Land of the Free...

Intercom: Good morning. Teachers, please turn on your televisions for the morning announcements.

TV: Please stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.

...sound familiar? Every day at school students are asked to stand with hand-on-heart and recite the Pledge. While it is not mandatory to say the Pledge, it's encouraged as a way to honor our Country. At the very least, it is important not to create a disturbance during the Pledge as a sign of respect. Instead of the Pledge, some school have students stand at silent, respectful attention to the playing of our National Anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner by Francis Scott Key (see the first stanza below).

O! say can you see by the dawn's early light / What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? / Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, / O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? / And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, / Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. / O! say does that star-spangled banner yet wave / O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Your Assignment: How do you feel about the Pledge and/or the National Anthem. What do you do during this time? Do you agree with the idea of being respectful towards these ceremonies? Why/Why not? Explain. Your comment must be at least 4 complete and well-written sentences and is due no later than Friday at 3:30 pm.

For fun... here is the late, great Jimi Hendrix performing his very cool rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner at Woodstock in 1969.

I like the pledge because I like to show my respect to my country. I also like the national anthem because i like the words and the melody. During the pledge and anthem I always sing along and say the pledge! I agree with being respectful of these ceremonies because it shows your respect to your country!

I agree with being respectful during both the Pledge and the National Anthem. During the Pledge I know some kids who talk during it, even me sometimes, but it's important to respect it because it states your alleigance to the United States. Also I extremely respect the National Anthem because it was written in honor of a U.S. fort that was bombed by the British, and still stood afterwards with the American flag still hanging from the pole. So the National Anthem has a lot of history behind it so it deserves to be respected.

I think that you should be respectful to our national anthem because that is the americas song. We have ppl fighting for our freedom in Irac so we can at least be respectful enough to respect them. We should be happy that we live in an independent state. So when you here the national anthem you should stop and remember the people who are fighting for our rights.

I think singing the Star-Spangled Banner might be a good idea. I mean, we sing the Pledge of Alligance every day and it might be nice to mix things up. I know most kids get bored with reciting the same things over and over again. Only, I'm not sure everyone knows the anthem by heart and most kids won't take the time to look at the TV screen and follow along with the words. I've thought about it before but it might just be too big a hassle. Our school is already very used to and attatched to the Pledge.
( P.S.- Great video. I love Jimi Hendrix;D )

I feel that kids should not be forced to sing the national anthem, although they should be forced to stand up and be quiet. I think that kids should be respectful towards these ceremonies because they remind us of our past and what we believe in as a nation. When I listen to the national anthem I generally think about an e-mail my mom sent me. The e-mail was a video of this teacher who explained to his students what the national anthem ment and why they should sing it. I thought that the teachers speech really made his students think about the national anthem and whats so important about it.

Bryan J per.5 said...

Our country is the best country in my opinion and deserves all of the respect in the world! So during the pledge i think that all students even if they don't say the pledge should be quiet and show respect, even though i don't do that all the time we should.I do think that its a good idea for students in other schools to be quiet during the star spangled banner too.

I think the pledge of alliegence is a good way to show your effection and repect for the country. It realy is bad when a kid just doesn't stand up or put there hand on there heart. I love the country and am happy to be a part of it.

i think the nationall anthem is good way to represant our country. it also represents our troops that went to war and fought for our country. the national anthem has alot of history in and how it stated by a guy who saw the british loose and he wrote of of that war. thats why i think it is a good thing.

I agree that it is respectful to say the Pledge of Allegiance. We live in the United States and if your not going to honor were you live. Then why live here? Also, I think that to sing the National Anthem is important to show your respect to your country.

I agree with being respectful during both the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem. I think everyone should say the Pledge of Allegiance to show respect to our nation. What I think when I'm saying the Pledge is that I'm proud to live in United States of America. I think both the National Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance are very important.<3

I think our national anthem is perfect for our free country. The lyrics say it all, what I mean is that it shows what we have been threw. From war to politics, the flag is still there. But honestly i do not care one bit about that song, it has a good tone but not that great. If we had to do the pledge i still would not do it, Its like if we dont do the pledge one time and the country doesnt trust us. But i am still thankfull to live in our free country. ( i wouldnt say its free because of all these bogazz lwas and all.

Christina Attia p.2 said...

I think the Pledge of Allegiance is important because it is supposed to be a time when we are suppose to stop what we are doing, recite the pledge and show our respect. I don't think it's necessary to sing the national anthem because I think that that’s a little overboard to listen/sing it everyday. No offense to the national anthem, but it’s a little slow and it gets boring and soon enough people will just stop listening to it. I think the kids should be respectful and stand up and not talk during the pledge, though.

Alicia J P.3 said...

What I think about our pledge and National Anthem is that it shows our patiatisom to the country. Also that it should make us feel proud to be in a free country, and to rember how long it took to get to be free. If people don't want to stand and put their hand on their chest should be their choice no one should get mad at that person. But, I believe that everyone should particapte in the pledge and National Anthem but thats my choice.

I'm proud of the Pledge and the National Anthem because they both represent our freedom and allegiance to our country. While the Pledge is being recited on the T.V, I usually stand with my hand on my chest, saying the words along with the recording. I do agree with the idea of being respectful towards these ceremonies. These ceremonies commemorate important historical events and are a good way to show that you love your country!

I think the National Anthem is important because it show's our pride and respect for our free country, And to all the men and woman fighting in the war. But i don't really think it's manditory to sing it, I rather just stand up and be quiet, an that's what i do. During the pledge sometimes i say the words and sometimes i don't, i kinda talk sometimes to but i don't mean to disrespect.

Sam D P.3 said...

I think it is crazy not to respect the pledge. I mean if you don't want to say it thats one thing but if your talking or making rude noises then it's like slaping one of the soldiers in iraq in the face. So all im saying is respect it, but I dont see why other schools don't allow you to sing. I think singing is making the song better. Thank you, and have a nice day

I think the Pledge of Allegiance is a very important part of our day. When the pledge comes on in the morning I don't always recite the pledge, but I stand up along with my fellow classmates. I 100% agree with the idea of being respectful during the National Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance because it reminds us all of the brave soldiers that fought and are still fighting for our country. In my opinion, not standing or carrying a conversation during the Pledge or Anthem, is sort of disrespecting our great country and the men and women who have served in the military. I agree with Alexandra, maybe we start saying the National Anthem instead of the Pledge, or maybe we should alternate days. Monday we say the pledge and Tuesday we say the Anthem. Either way, both are important to this country. :)

I think that the national anthem and the pledge are nice and respectful to the people that served and died in the war, but I dont think we should have to do it!! My reason why is because isn't Florida suppose to be a free country??? Shouldn't we be able to choose waht we want to do or what we want to say? I think so!! I think if we want to say it then we will, but if we dont then the peolple can just remain silent.

I think that it is very important that we plegde everymorning during the announcements because we are showing respect to our country. Also because Mrs.Mogan yells at us if we dont:) But we are so lucky to live in the country that we do. We dont have to go so many days without food or water like those poor people in africa and other countries. I am happy that I live in America and I wouldnt want to live anywhere else. Oh and that guitar thing that Jimi Hendrix did was very cool!!!

The Pledge is very important because it represents all of the struggles our country went through and all of the poeple who were killed to form our country and it is a great way to start the day. Even though I get bored by the pledge and start talking i think that it need s to be respected. I would much rather start the day off with the national anthem than the pledge i still think that either of them deserve respect. I would also like the anthem more than the pledge because that would definatly wake me up better than the pledge.

There sure are alot of songs out there; but, by far, i think the national anthem is the best. In elementary we did both to show are respect and honor to the country. i think both, the pledge and the anthem, are equally important because what soldiers did and are doing for there country to keep its freedom is priceless and deserves AT LEAST a pledge and/or anthem! i honestly do care about the pledge because i am grateful to be a citizen of the land of the free. people would die just to come vsit the USA, just to take a breath of freedom for once and i honestly think we take that for granted sometimes. yay im #11....:D

I think that the National Anthem should be played in school rather than the Pledge of Allegiance. This song is definitely more important than the Pledge. During this time, people should just stay still, and be quiet, but they don’t need to put their hand on their heart in my opinion. I think that the Pledge is nowhere near as important as the National Anthem.

I think this way because saying the pledge is fine.

I think that the national anthem is important, because it represents us. It was created from Francis Scottkey. The National Anthem is special to all americans. We shall not be forced to sing the anthem because it is ones freedom of speech. We all have our own rights and it is each of our decision to stand and pledge the flag of United States of America. The U.S Supreme Court case : West Virginia Board Of Eduction vs. Barnette, rules that no student can be forced to pledge of alligiance or salute the U.S flag. If anyone chooses not to pledge, it is their right and freedom.

And we still won, and even today, we're still fighting for our country and beliefs and people are still dieing for their country and beliefs. We need to honor these brave men and women, though singing the National Anthem does seem a bit derastic, being quiet and respectful during the pledge, does not.

I also hate it when people dont take the pledge of allegence seriously. That gets me so mad they are living in a country were you can almost do what you whant. When there are countrys were you cant even wear what you want to wear. If you wont say the pledge at least stand there in silents foor repect. Thats what i think about ther pledge.

I like the pledge and the national anthem because they both show respect to our country and i do pledge to the flag everyday but just not on the weekend. The National Anthem is important but then the pledge isnt really but is still respect our country.

I think that our national anthem is very important. If you dont stand or put your hand on your heart is very disrespecful. And it is like saying that you dont care about our country. I hold my hand on my heart an stand in silence during the anthem because I respect my country.

Ok soo i dont always resite the pledge every day but I definitly stand. I dont know anyone that dosnt think the pledge is a good thing. Whoever thinks they shouldnt stand for the pledge is obviously crazy! I love america I love where i live sure theres places in the world id love to visit but i could never imagine living anywhere else. So for those people who fought for me to love my country and be free i stand for the pledge, and to me the anthems awesome! I love it when the people at the baseball game come out and sing it I always stand with my hand over my heart like a true american! < haha sounds cheesey but its true! :))

I stand every morning in school for the pledge because it is a way to show respect to are nation and where we live. I think its important to show respect because then you feel respected to. I also think that out of all the songs that we can sing for are nation .. the National Anthem has to be the best!

Well I personally don't really feel like standing and putting my hand on my heart for a minute like some americans also. I mean it is good to show respect but it is not mandatory to do so. But, I pay my respects (sometimes) to what Francis Scott key saw at fort McHenry.

I belive that the U.S. would not be the same without the anthem. The anthem is important because it was made during our war for independance. I also believe that the pledge is important because it shows loyalty to the U.S. I also beleive that the moment of scilence is important because i give thanks to those who served in the previous wars.

I take pride in being an American. I stand up for the pledge of allegiance every day. If the Star Spangled Banner is being played, I will stand up. I stand up, because I am proud to be an American.

I feel proud when i recite the National Anthem. Im proud to be an american and through out the pledge i stand there with a smile on my face. I do agree that we should all be silently respectful when reciting the plege because weither your proud or not were all live in this country and were all americans.

I think that the National Anthem is vey important because it reminds us of the people who died in any war. For example Iraq because many people in that war had died it might be your family or friends. I don't resect people who beleave in our nation.

The national anthem is no joke. We have liberty and justice (thats what it says in the pledge) and i do take it serios when it goes on in the morning. It is so disrespectful when half the class doesnt even stand up to say the pledge. i doooo:) its time well all be respectful.
